Changes Are Afoot

I’ve been working feverishly to install a forum area integrated into the blog. Well, maybe not feverishly, more like liesurely. It’s there if you know where to look, but I’m not telling where, yet. When it’s ready you’ll see a forum link in the site navigation area at the top of the page.

At this point it’s really just something fun to experiment with. I enjoy the process of learning new things. It helps keep my mind active on “useful” things. I don’t know if anyone would actually be interested in using a forum, but it’ll be there just in case. I expect an initial flurry of activity, then it’ll quietly die off… and if it gets out of hand it can be turned off with just a couple clicks of my mouse.

This blog started out as just something fun to experiment with and it has grown by leaps and bounds. I’ve now actually got a couple, ok, make that a few people who read it regularly. ;-)

Best of luck, Pete.

I managed two (phpBB) forums in the past and for about 2-years and was pretty good at managing/tweaking them.

Forum environments are very different from blog environments as you’ll discover and the quality of the forum’s contents are almost entirely in the hands of those who post unless you start making all your additions sticky.

Personally, I much prefer the blog “comment” environment with no further desire to gobble a MySQL with a forum. BTW, it was a security leak in a phpBB forum that allowed my son’s band website to be hacked to death so be prepared to keep whatever forum you create up-to-date.

Updating to WordPress 2.0 may well just be a nice option, but when it comes to phpBB, you’d better stay on your toes . . . experience is talking.

I’m trying out a plugin that integrates the forum into WordPress. So far it’s been very easy… upload the plugin, activate, set a few options… that’s all there is to it. It creates a WP Page automatically.

The forum would be a place where people can comment/discuss things that wouldn’t fit within the normal blog comment environment.

I’m holding off on upgrading to WP 2, mostly out of laziness, but there have been a couple issues that have come up on the WP support forums that could have an effect on my setup. As soon as those issues are resolved I’ll go ahead with the upgrade.

Wow, everything you guys put…..i don’t understand…:-) Adult language….JEEZ!!

Brittany,

It’s not every adult language, just the ones who understand it. I for one do not understnd it all but love what I do understand.
